The short version
- Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website for local discovery.
- Reviews are the highest-leverage ranking factor you can actively influence.
- Categories and services on the profile are keyword fields — treat them that way.
- Post to the profile. Almost nobody does, and it is a live ranking signal.
- Local SEO compounds slowly. Forty days of proper work sets up months of results.
For most Indian local businesses, the highest-value piece of digital real estate is not their website or their Instagram page. It is the three-result map pack that appears when someone searches "best biryani near me" or "jewellery shop in Jayanagar".
That box gets the calls, the directions taps and the walk-ins. Here is what actually moves it.
Fix the profile first
Most Google Business Profiles are half-finished, and completeness itself is a ranking factor. Work through this list:
- Primary category. The single most important field. Pick the most specific accurate one — "South Indian restaurant" beats "restaurant".
- Secondary categories. Add every genuinely applicable one. These expand the queries you can appear for.
- Services and products. Real keyword fields that most businesses leave blank. List them individually with descriptions.
- Hours, including special hours. Festival closures matter in India and wrong hours generate bad reviews.
- Attributes. Parking, wheelchair access, card payment, outdoor seating. These feed filtered searches.
- Photos. Exterior, interior, product, team — and keep adding. Profiles with fresh photos perform better.
- The description. 750 characters. Write it for a human, but include what you do and where.
NAP consistency
Your Name, Address and Phone number must be identical everywhere they appear — profile, website, Justdial, Zomato, Facebook, directories. Inconsistency is a common and entirely avoidable reason for weak local rankings.
Reviews are the lever you actually control
You cannot move your physical distance from a searcher. You can absolutely move your review profile, and it is the strongest signal available to you.
What works:
- Ask in person, at the right moment. Immediately after a good experience, not by SMS three days later.
- Make it one tap. A QR code at the counter linking straight to the review form. Every extra step halves the response.
- Aim for a steady trickle. Five a week for a year beats two hundred in one month, which looks manipulated.
- Reply to every single one. Positive and negative. Replies are visible, they signal an active business, and they are read by prospects.
- Never buy reviews. Fake review detection is good now, and profile suspension is a much bigger problem than a low count.
Then reuse the good ones. A strong review is content — put it on your site, on posters, in reels. The mechanics are in the restaurant content calendar.
Post to your profile
Google Business posts are one of the most underused features in Indian local marketing. They appear on your profile, they signal an active business, and almost none of your competitors are doing it.
One or two a week is plenty: offers, new arrivals, events, festival timings, a new dish. You are already making this content for Instagram — the marginal cost of also putting it here is about ninety seconds.
Local keywords, without overthinking
Local search intent is unusually predictable. It comes in four shapes:
- Category + city. "wedding photographer Mysuru"
- Category + area. "gym in Indiranagar"
- Near me. "cafe near me" — handled almost entirely by proximity and profile strength.
- Specific + local. "gold hallmarking charges Bengaluru"
Build pages for the first two — one solid page per service per area you genuinely serve. Not thin doorway pages with the city name swapped; actual pages with real, area-specific content. Google is good at spotting the difference.
What the website needs to do
The site's local SEO job is narrow but non-negotiable:
- NAP in the footer of every page, matching the profile exactly;
- an embedded map on the contact page;
LocalBusinessstructured data with address, hours and geo coordinates;- a page per location if you have more than one;
- fast on mobile — most Indian local search is mobile, often on patchy connections;
- title tags that include the city where it reads naturally.
Speed deserves emphasis. A site that takes six seconds on a 4G connection loses a meaningful share of visitors before it renders, and that behaviour feeds back into rankings.
Citations and directories in India
Beyond Google, the Indian local ecosystem has its own gravity: Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART for B2B, Zomato and Swiggy for food, MakeMyTrip and Booking for stays, Practo for healthcare.
Claim the relevant ones, make the NAP identical, and then leave them alone. This is a one-afternoon job with a long tail of benefit, not an ongoing programme.
A realistic timeline
| Window | Work | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–10 | Profile completion, NAP audit, technical fixes | Profile views and direction taps rising |
| Days 10–25 | Location and service pages, schema, speed | Long-tail queries starting to appear |
| Days 25–40 | Reviews programme, posts, citations | Movement on category + area terms |
| Month 3–6 | Content, links, ongoing reviews | Competitive map-pack positions |
That first 40-day block is deliberately front-loaded — it is where all the backend work belongs, and it is how our own SEO engagements are structured before we look at the data together and agree what comes next.
Frequently asked questions
Profile fixes can show movement in two to four weeks. Competitive local keywords take three to six months. Our own SEO engagements start with a 40-day train-and-run window where the technical and on-page work happens, then re-price based on what the data shows.
Yes. The profile drives discovery, but the website is what Google uses to understand and corroborate what you do. A profile with no site behind it ranks less well and converts less well — people check.
There is no magic number. What matters is being competitive within your local set and having a steady flow rather than a burst. If the top three results in your area have 200 reviews and you have 12, that gap is your first job.
Proximity is a strong factor in the map pack, so ranking far from your address is difficult. The way around it is content and pages targeting those areas plus genuine relevance signals — not fake addresses, which get profiles suspended.
Always, and quickly, and without arguing. A calm, specific reply that offers to fix the problem is read by every future customer who sees that review. The reply is for them, not for the reviewer.
